A Life Well-Loved: Celebrating Steven Bortner

With hearts full of gratitude, we celebrate the incredible life of Steven Henry Bortner, 79, of York, PA, who went home to be with his Lord and Savior on March 23, 2025. Born February 11, 1946, to Anna M. (Senft) and Henry A. Bortner in York, PA, he fought the good fight, finished the race, and kept the faith. While we mourn his passing, we rejoice in the beautiful legacy of love, faith, and kindness he leaves behind.

After graduating from York Suburban High School in 1964, Steve began working for AMP, where he dedicated 46 years of service. He also honorably served in the Army and in Vietnam from 1965-67. He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Harlan Ray Bortner.

Steve was a man who loved big-his Savior, his family, his church, and every person who had the privilege of knowing him. His life was marked by deep devotion, quiet strength, and boundless generosity. He made people feel seen, valued, and cherished. And of all the things he loved in this world, nothing compared to the love he had for his beloved wife, Kathy.

Steve and Kathy (Rohrbaugh) Bortner's inspiring story of love is a beautiful partnership built on faith, hope, and unwavering devotion. For 55 years, they walked through life hand in hand, facing every joy and challenge together. They were each other's greatest encouragers, best friends, and constant companions. Whether with family, going to church, traveling to new places, enjoying a meal at one of their favorite restaurants, or simply sharing quiet moments at home, their love was evident in everything they did. They laughed together often, supported each other fully, prayed together, and created a home filled with warmth, love, and joy. To see them together was to witness a love that was steady, strong, and full of grace.

Steve was also a devoted father to Doug Bortner and his wife, Lisa, and Amy Poff and her husband, Matthew. But nothing made him light up more than being "Grandpa" to his four incredible grandchildren- Anna and her husband Zach McCorquodale, Jakob Bortner, and Ben and Ella Poff. He adored them and soaked up every moment he could, cheering them on, sharing wisdom, and making them laugh. His love for his family was deep and unwavering, a constant source of strength and joy.

For 42 years (since 1983), Glenview Alliance Church was their home, and Steve poured his heart into serving. As an elder and deacon, he led with wisdom, humility, and an unwavering love for his church family. But his greatest joy was always the youth. For 36 years (since 1988), "Mr. B" mentored, encouraged, and invested in junior high students, making each one feel seen, loved, and accepted. He believed in them. Whether it was a listening ear, a well-timed word of encouragement, a thoughtful text message, or welcoming them with kindness and a genuine smile, he made a lasting impact on every student he met. Because of his kindness, faith, and steady presence, generations of young people grew closer to Jesus and carried his influence with them into their own lives. His legacy lives on in the countless lives he helped shape.

Steve's life was a reflection of Jesus. He was kind, full of grace, and steady in his faith. He made people feel at home with a warm smile, an encouraging word, and a heart that always had room for others. He lived with integrity, always putting others first, made the best of every situation and he left a lasting impact.

While we will miss him dearly, we celebrate the full, joyful, and deeply meaningful life he lived. His love, wisdom, and unwavering faith have shaped us, and his presence will always be felt in the lives he touched.
