Shirley L. (Smith) McCullough (b. June 23, 1931; d. December 14, 2016) Glen Rock native Shirley Lorraine (Smith) McCullough died peacefully in her home on December 14, 2016, after a long illness. She was 85. Shirley was the loving wife of L. Gene McCullough for nearly 66 years, and she was beloved among her family, friends, and local community. Together with Gene, Shirley raised five children: Pamela (husband, Will) Wible, Deborah (husband, Jim) Chantiles, Kim (wife, Angele; first wife, Janet, deceased), Wayne (wife, Becki), and Daryl, along with eight grandchildren (Matthew, Nathan, Kristi, Quinn, Lauren, Heather, Mark and Kelsey), and five great-grandchildren (Kieran, Charlie, Connor, Benjamin, and Graham) and one on the way. Through marriage, she held closely three step-grandchildren and 10 step-great-grandchildren, whom she loved as her own. Shirley was the daughter of John R. and Florence (Rohrbaugh) Smith. The Smiths were farmers and later home developers in Glen Rock, where they were also owners of Smith’s Supermarket and Smith’s Country Kitchen. After attending Shippensburg State College, Shirley worked as the bookkeeper for all the family businesses. Her loving siblings who also survive her include Gloria Good and Ronald Smith (wife, Carolyn), as well as living in-laws Maryanne Smith and Leroy Klinedinst. She was pre-deceased by her sister Charmaine Klinedinst and her brother John H. Smith. Shirley and Gene were the biggest fans of their children, and they were famously in attendance at hundreds -- maybe thousands -- of their offsprings’ concerts, sporting events and other special activities. An active leader in her community, Shirley was a past president of the Glen Rock Woman’s Club, a chairperson of the Glen Rock High School Reunion Committee, and past president of numerous Parent Teacher organizations for her children’s schools, more than one of which she founded. She was a longtime member of Bethlehem Steltz Church, and more recently a member of Trinity United Church of Christ, Glen Rock. Shirley will be fondly remembered in Glen Rock and beyond for serving as a leader of the Susquehannock High School chapter of the AFS (foreign exchange student program), for many years leading their programs, hosting summer student bus tours, and holding fundraisers such as her signature Turkey Supper. Shirley and family hosted numerous AFS students over the decades, but none was more special than Dan Smith Chavira (Long Beach, CA), who has been another son since being hosted during the 1981-82 school year. Funeral services will be held on Sunday December 18, 2016 at Trinity United Church of Christ, 27 Manchester St, Glen Rock, with Rev. Fred Walthour officiating. A viewing will be held from 1:00 to 2:00 PM Sunday at the Church. Burial will be in Trinity U.C.C Church Cemetery. The family has requested that memorial contributions be made to either the Southern York County School District Foundation Scholarship Fund (mark for AFS scholarship) P.O. Box 128, Glen Rock, PA 17327 or Trinity United Church of Christ, 27 Manchester St Glen Rock, PA. 17327. Geiple Funeral Home, Inc., 53 Main Street, Glen Rock is in charge of the arrangements.
