Sheldon M. Newberger Sheldon M. “Shelly” Newberger, Age 86, of Lantana, Fl. and formerly of York, PA, passed away on Saturday November 12, 2016. He is survived by two sons, Stuart of McLean, Virginia and Jonathan of York, and his brother Joel, of New Jersey, as well as 5 grandchildren, Elana, Rebecca, Jake, Caroline and Marissa and one great grandson Micah. He was preceded in death by his loving wife Lillian and son Gary. Devoted and loving father, husband, brother, grandfather, great-grandfather, uncle and dedicated member of the Jewish, social and business communities of York. A renaissance man who overcame poverty in his youth, Shelly was not only a highly successful business executive but also loved opera and classical music (especially Mozart), Dutch Masters and Italian Renaissance art, history, biography, science, golf, skiing, world-wide travel, movies and theatre. Born in New York City on July 17, 1930 to Benjamin and Rose (Israel) Newberger, he was raised on the Lower East Side of Manhattan and after graduating from Stuyvesant High School he received a degree in Mechanical Engineering from City College of New York. Although a member of the ROTC in college, Shelly was excused from military service in order to work as an engineer on sensitive military contractor projects during the Korean War. He continued to work in that field in the private sector until 1967 for companies such as Adler Electronics, Otis Elevator and Litton Industries, when he moved his family to York in order to become Vice President and General manager of Cole Steel, at that time a division of Litton Industries. He thereafter served as Vice President of Berg Electronics, and then joined Graham Engineering, in York, where he became President of Graham Container and helped guide that company to international success and industry dominance until his retirement. He was an active member of the Jewish communities in Plainview, New York and York, and served as chairman of the building committees in both communities, overseeing the design and construction of 2 highly praised Jewish Community Centers. He also served as the President of the York Jewish Community Center located on Hollywood Drive. He and his late wife were active members of Ohev Shalom Synagogue of York. He mentored many in his family and community, having a positive and lasting impact on their lives. After retirement to Florida, he was active with the Jewish Federation of Florida, including the United Jewish Appeal of Palm Beach County. In retirement, he enjoyed golf, tennis, the arts and travel. Funeral Services will be held at Temple Beth Israel, 2090 Hollywood Drive, York, PA 17403 on Tuesday, November 15, 2016 at 11 am. Interment will follow at South Hills Cemetery in York. Arrangements are being handled by Geiple Funeral Home, 53 Main Street, Glen Rock, PA 17327 In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Ohev Shalom Synagogue, 2090 Hollywood Drive, York, Pa 17403.
