Sheldon Kaplan

Sheldon Kaplan, 85, of Masonic Village, Elizabethtown, and formerly of York, PA, died on November 11, 2016. Sheldon was born in New York City on May 1, 1931, to Max and Nettie Kaplan. Surviving are his wife Patricia, with whom he shared 33 years of marriage, son Alan (Maggie) Kaplan of Wynnewood, PA, daughter Jennifer Hill of Palmyra, NJ, grandchildren Sydney and Maxwell Kaplan, a sister Barbara Kalmus (Les) of Ulster Hills NY. He was preceded in death by his son, Edward Hill. Sheldon served four years in the US Air Force and in the National Guard. He served as a Pilot Trained Navigation Instructor and Bombardier with the rank of First Lieutenant. He retired as vice president and senior financial advisor from Merrill Lynch. He also was an Adjunct Instructor at York College of Pennsylvania and Penn State Capital Campus. He held undergraduate and graduate degrees in Business Administration and Marketing from New York University. Sheldon was a 32nd degree Mason and held Masonic memberships in Treichler Lodge 682, Scottish Rite, Valley of Harrisburg, Zembo Shrine, Tall Cedars of Lebanon Forest #43, Donegal Area High Twelve and the Masonic Village Shrine Club. He was also a member of Sojourners Chapter 76 and Sojourners 76 Heroes Club. He was a board member for numerous non-profit organizations, and held memberships in East York Rotary, York Sertoma, York Symphony Association, Easter Seals Society, Outdoor Country Club, and the Jewish Community Center. He was Past President of the following York organizations: Quarterback Club, Optimist Club, Cosmopolitan Club, Downtown Club, and Temple Beth Israel Men’s Club. Sheldon’s hobbies included golf, oil painting, pickleball, tennis and sailing. He became an EMT at the age of 79 and was the oldest ambulance driver in York County. Burial will be private. Memorial services will be held at the Sell Chapel at Masonic Village in Elizabethtown on Wednesday, November 16 at 11am. Arrangements are being handled by Geiple Funeral Home, 53 Main Street, Glen Rock Pa.
