Ruth Smotkin York Ruth (Kessler) Smotkin, 86, of York, died Monday February 2, 2015 at her home. She was the wife of the late Harold R. Smotkin. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 AM, Friday, February 6, 2015 at Temple Beth Israel, 2090 Hollywood Drive, York. Officiating at the service will be Rabbi Jeffrey Astrachan. Burial will be in South Hill Hebrew Cemetery. The Geiple Funeral Home, Inc. 53 Main Street, Glen Rock is in charge of the arrangements. Mrs. Smotkin was born on January 8, 1929 in Philadelphia and was a daughter of the late Edward and Irene (Klein) Kessler. Ruth was a homemaker and assisted her late husband with the operations of their men’s clothing store, The Hub Store in York, which they owned until their retirement in 1992. She was a member of Temple Beth Israel, the Sisterhood of the Temple and the York Jewish Community Center. Ruthie was also well known for the fabulous meals, which she served regularly to family and friends. People looked forward to invitations to those dinners and especially the wonderful desserts that concluded each meal. Her extended family came to love the warm atmosphere surrounding those meals. She frequently cooked for the Jewish Community Center and Synagogue Sisterhoods as well as other organizations. She leaves a daughter, Myra E. Smotkin-Doughty and her husband, Robert Doughty of Colts Neck, NJ; a son, Mark L. Smotkin and wife Danielle of Longboat Key, FL; grandchildren, Eddie Smotkin, Natalie Smotkin, Erik Doughty, Allie Doughty; and a sister, Evelyn Williams of York. Ruth was also predeceased by her brother, Sol Kessler, and her sister, Beatrice Piperberg, both of York.
