Roy Gordon Lovell (89) born May 29, 1935, died January 31, 2025 after a brief illness.
One of three boys born to Lewis and Verdeena Lovell in Allemansville PA, Roy grew up roaming and foraging the mountain woods, where his life-long love of hunting, fishing and growing food began. He married his first wife Marilyn in 1957 after he completed two years of service in the Air Force. In 1961, they purchased a farm in Brodbecks PA where he could put to use his many talents for carpentry, homestead farming, and mechanical repairs even while he worked off-farm as an x-ray technician at Hanover Hospital. Although that marriage ended and the farm was sold, Roy found life-long happiness when he married Lovelle Rambo MacDonald in 1973. Together they purchased another farm over the hill in Glenville PA where they spent the next 51 years together. Roy said his church was the natural world - the woods and wildlife in particular. He remained devoted to homestead food production which included garden, fruit and nut trees, animal husbandry, butchering, smoked meats, canning and freezing. He was a life member of the NRA and won marksman awards at state gun tournaments. He reloaded his own ammo, made antler-handle knives from bed frames, studied seed saving, and did finish carpentry.
Roy is survived by a blended family of 7 children: Regina Herman, Columbia PA; Timothy MacDonald (Dora), Rock Hill SC; Stephen Lawrence MacDonald (Karla), Glen Rock PA; Christopher MacDonald (Karen), Gettysburg, PA; Ceci Gilbert (Dan), Summerville, GA; Mark Lovell (Sally), Poquosan VA, & Sally Lovell (Dick Slater), Port Townsend, WA. Roy is pre-deceased by both brothers and both wives, two sons-in-law and two grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to Pappus House, Thomasville or the VNA of Hanover. Roy's life will be celebrated at a later date for family only.
