Surrounded by family after a debilitating illness, Sunday July 9, 2023, Ronald R. (Butch) Smith, 78, peacefully entered his heavenly home. Born April 21, 1945, the son of John R. and Florence (Rohrbaugh) Smith of Glen Rock, PA, he is survived by his loving wife Carolyn (Kasper) Smith with whom he would have celebrated 59 years of marriage next month.
In 1962 he was named to the All Laurel Conference as Outstanding Lineman. He was also named to the Classic 33 Football team in 1963. Ron played semi-pro football for the Southern York County Lions and Red Lion Lions teams for many years. He was also a member of the Glen Rock Jaycees and Trinity United Church of Christ in Glen Rock.
After graduation from Susquehannock High School, he earned a degree from the National Meat Cutting School in Toledo, Ohio in October 1963. Ron worked as head butcher at Smith's Quality Super Market in Glen Rock and later at Saubel's Markets in Shrewsbury.
Ron and his wife ran a store at the York Fair for many years which provided meat and produce to the vendors there. They also had their own Food Trailer "Here's the Beef & More" that attended local events and also the Fair.
Ron enjoyed wood working and refinishing antique furniture. He was always ready to go hunting and was a charter member of The Lazy Seven Hunting Camp in Potter County. Clearly loved by his nephews and nieces, Ron enjoyed spending time with them and watched them having fun for many hours at his pool.
He was a competitive card player and he and his brother made an unbeatable team. What the luck of the draw didin't provide, he made up for in bravado. Many laugh filled hours marked the holidays of the Smith family. Ron and Carolyn liked to travel together and took numerous cruises and trips to Hawaii.
Predeceased siblings include sister Shirley McCullough, Charmaine Klinedinst, Gloria Good and brother John H. Smith.
Ron and his wife, for many years, were a loving extended family of the late Tom Rohrbach.
