Robert Dise

Capt. Robert L. Dise, USN (Ret) Robert Lindsay "Bob" Dise, of Vienna, VA passed away November 18, 2014 at the age of 90. Born and raised in Glen Rock, Pennsylvania, son of A.P. and Anna Dise, and brother to Dick, Joe, Betty and Donald, Bob loved the outdoors. Joining the Boy Scouts at the age of 12 in 1935, his adventures included treks through the Adirondacks and participation in the 1939 New York World's Fair, the same year he earned his Eagle rank. Bob attended Gettysburg College then entered the United States Naval Academy, graduating in 1945. He spent the next 30 years with the Navy as a Surface Warfare officer on ships ranging from destroyers to aircraft carriers, commanding a destroyer, LPD and a destroyer squadron. He was a Naval Academy instructor, and served with the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, U.S. Air Force Advanced Ballistic Reentry Systems, and director of Surface and Anti-Submarine Warfare Systems in the Naval Ordinance and Naval Sea Systems Command. Vietnam service included command of the USS OGDEN (LPD 5) and Commanding Officer of the Naval Support Activity, Saigon (1970-71). In 1960 Bob earned a Masters in Electrical Engineering (Guided Missiles) from the U.S. Naval Postgraduate School. Naval service awards include the Legion of Merit (Combat V), Bronze Star Medal (Combat V), Meritorious Service Medal with Gold Star, Navy Commendation Medal, Air Force Commendation Medal, and Combat Action Ribbon. Bob retired from the Navy in 1975 as a Captain, and went to work for SAIC, now Leidos, where he worked for 30 years, directing the High Energy Laser Program, served as special advisor to the Navy for reactivation of four IOWA class battleships, and was a member of the Naval Command and Control Systems support group. A lifelong Scouter, Bob volunteered with the Boys Scouts for over 40 years, serving as a Scoutmaster, Eagle advisor, troop committee chair, unit commissioner, assistant district commissioner, district chair, and member of the Council Executive Board and various advisory boards. He earned his Wood Badge and received the District Award of Merit and the Silver Beaver. He was a Vigil Honor member of the Order of the Arrow, recipient of the Lutheran Lamb Award and the Masonic Daniel Carter Beard Award for service to youth, and the BSA National Capital Area Council John L. Wolfgang Lifetime Achievement Award. Bob and his wife Evelyn have attended Christ Lutheran Church in Fairfax, Virginia for decades where he served in numerous positions including church council, usher, homeless outreach and greeter. Bob is survived by his wife of 67 years, Evelyn; five children, Bob Jr. (Jen), Patricia, David (Jan, deceased), Carol (Steve) Lewis, and Jeff (Deb); his grandchildren Aaron (Ashleigh) Dise, Sara (Jason) Housewright, Hannah (Geoffrey) Critzer, Elise Flanders, Ian Flanders and Jonathan Flanders; and eight great-grandchildren Emma, Juliet, Phoebe, Kahana and William Dise, and Fiona, Elya and baby (expected in April 2015) Housewright; and numerous other loving in-laws, nieces, nephews and other relatives. The family will receive visitors at Money & King Funeral Home, 171 Maple Avenue W., Vienna, VA 22180, from 6:00-8:00 pm, Friday, November 28, 2014. A memorial service will be conducted at Christ Lutheran Church, 3810 Meredith Drive Fairfax, VA 22030, at 10:00 am, Saturday, November 29, 2014. Burial will take place at 3:00 pm that same day at Zion Lutheran Cemetery, Glen Rock, Pennsylvania.
