Rhea P. Weinbrom

April 29, 1931 — November 3, 2024

On Sunday, November 3, 2024, Rhea P. (Piperberg) Weinbrom, 93, of York passed away at Sterling Care Nursing and Rehab in Rockville, MD. She was the wife of the late Lewis Weinbrom for 57 years before his passing in 2010. She was born in April of 1931 in York to the late David M. and Sophia Q. (Simons) Piperberg. She graduated from William Penn High School in 1949 as the salutatorian of her class. She then graduated from Syracuse Unitversity with a BA in Arts with an emphasis on fabric and wallpaper design in 1953. Rhea would then graduate from Towson University in 1972 with an MA in Arts Education.

Rhea's first job out of college was as an artist with Topflight Tape. She then began her teaching career as an elementary art teacher in Northeastern School District in 1965. A few years later, she secured a position with York Suburban School System where she taught for over 25 years.

Rhea was a cancer survivor, surviving and thriving for 35 years after being treated for breast cancer at the age of 58. She became a bas mitzvah (called to the Torah) as an adult in 1992. (Girls were not permitted to be called to the Torah when Rhea was 13, the age when girls today are called to the Torah.) She was a talented water colorist - participating in several shows of her work, some at the York Center for Art. Rhea and Lewis traveled extensively, a lifelong dream of Lewis, with stops including Europe, Scandinavia, China, Russia, Australia, New Zealand, Israel, Africa, and South America, among other places.

Everywhere they went, Lewis took Rhea to an art museum.

Her hobbies included doing the New York Times Sunday Crossword Puzzle (on most Sundays), taking long walks, doing aerobics, calligraphy and taking art classes.

Together, Rhea and Lewis would have three children, Ruth Weinbrom and husband Mike Brewer, Debra Weinbrom Berkowitz and husband Joe Berkowitz, and Sally Weinbrom Kram and husband Neil Kram; three grandchildren, Philip Berkowitz, Sophia Kram, and Aviva Kram. She was preceded in death by her parents and one brother, Alan Piperberg.

Rhea lived in Haines Acres for most of her married life and attended Ohev Shalom Congregation in York, where she was an active member of the Sisterhood and Editor of the Ohev Shalom Newsletter. After Lewis passed in 2010, Rhea moved to Maryland to be near her grandchildren.
