Philip E. Ruth

August 23, 1951 — November 30, 2024

Philip E. Ruth of Dallastown passed away in University Park, PA on Saturday, November 30, 2024, with his beloved Penn State Nittany Lions ahead 31-7 at halftime, and on their way to the Big Ten Championship Game.

It was an ending only the most fervent of Penn State football fans could have written, and one even his family finds most fitting: in his favorite Penn State parking lot next to Pegula Ice Arena, with the lights of Beaver Stadium illuminating the night.

Phil was the son of the late Paul L. and Dorothy A. Ruth. His wife of nearly 45 years, Anne, preceded him in death in May 2023. He was also preceded in death by his grandmother, Ruth Shive, who was like a second mother to him.

Left to cherish his memories and take care of his large Penn State collection are his daughters Karen Ruth (Matt Boyer) and Kimberly Welch (Todd), and grandson Peyton Taylor. He is also survived by his brothers Randy Ruth (Melissa) and Jeffrey Ruth (Deborah). He had many nieces, nephews, stepchildren, step grandchildren, cousins, and extended family whom he adored.

Phil was an avid Penn State and Pittsburgh Steelers fan who celebrated the start of football season every year - even the losing seasons. He also enjoyed traveling, and made an annual trip to Myrtle Beach and every Penn State bowl game that didn't require flying.

The ultimate girl dad, Phil supported his daughters in all their adventures. He developed an appreciation for craft beer, and enjoyed trying new beers at Collusion Tap Works with his oldest daughter. He was even a member of their Colluders Club. Phil was also an enthusiastic yes for every Taylor Swift concert his youngest daughter invited him to. While he never saw the Steelers play a regular season game in their home stadium, he did see Taylor in concert there twice.

In his younger years he enjoyed cars, motorcycles, and spending time with friends.

Too late in life he found enjoyment in Philadelphia Phillies baseball, Twitter, and cheesecake.

Phil retired from Garrod Hydraulics in 2017 after 35 years as a machinist and scheduler. His favorite part of the job was showing up early for a cup of coffee and conversation with his co-workers who turned into friends.

Family and friends are invited to Phil's Celebration of Life on Monday, December 9, 2024. Viewing will be from 10 AM to noon at Geiple-Predicce Funeral Home, 53 Main Street, Glen Rock, PA 17327. A short service will follow at noon. Interment will follow services at Susquehanna Memorial Gardens, 250 Chestnut Hill Road, York, PA 17402.

In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to Autism York or the Eagles Autism Foundation.
