Norma R. Metz

July 12, 1943 — April 24, 2023

On Monday, April 24, 2023, Norma Rae (Thoman) Metz, 79, of Red Lion passed away at WellSpan York Hospital. She was the devoted wife of the late William H. Metz, Jr. for 49 years before his passing in 2010. Norma was born on July 12, 1943, in Glen Rock, to the late Leroy and Ruth (Smith) Thoman. She was a 1961 graduate of Susquehannock High School. She was a seamstress and tailor having worked for several different businesses before owning and operating her own tailoring and alterations business, Norma's Needle Nook. She enjoyed making many pieces of clothing for family and friends and won several first place awards at the York Interstate Fair for her handiwork.


Norma was a faithful and active member of Cross Roads United Methodist Church. She participated in the United Methodist Women Missions and Outreaches, as well as numerous other functions. She enjoyed going to the beach and spending time in Lewes, DE. However, what she treasured most of all was any time spent with family.


Norma is survived by her two daughters, Sherri L. Taylor and husband Steven, and Kathi L. Smith; four siblings, David Thoman, Elaine Miller and husband Paul, Dean Thoman and wife Joyce, and Dottie Howard and husband Duane; four grandchildren, Lauren Calaman and husband Zachary, Devin Taylor and wife Karlie, Colton Smith and Kadan Smith; and one great-granddaughter, Hailey Jo Calaman. She was preceded in death by her husband; parents; and one sister-in-law Cassandra Thoman.

Public viewings will be on Sunday, April 30 from 3:00pm to 5:00pm at Geiple-Predicce Funeral and Cremation Services, Inc., 53 Main St., Glen Rock, and again on Monday, May 1 from 10:00am until a funeral service begins at 11:00am at Cross Roads United Methodist Church, 6881 Church Rd, Felton, PA 17322. Interment will follow in Susquehanna Memorial Gardens, York. Pastor Gary Allshouse will officiate. The family is requesting for respiratory health reasons, in lieu of flowers, donations in her memory be made to Cross Roads United Methodist Church at the address above, OR the Gift of Life Donor Program, 401 N. 3rd.
