Mervin L. Hengst York Mervin L. Hengst, 94, of York, died Sunday, June 18, 2017 at his home. He was the husband of Ruth A. (Lewis) Hengst with whom he shared 22 years of marriage on February 28th and the late Rosine E. (Smith) Hengst. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM Friday June 23, 2017 at Salem United Church of Christ, 24 Franklin Street, Jacobus, with Pastor Kevin L. Becker, officiating. A graveside service, with military rites by the York County Veterans Honor Guard will follow at 2:00 PM Friday at Prospect Hill Cemetery, York. Viewings will be held from 6:00 to 8:00 PM Thursday at the Geiple Funeral Home, Inc. 53 Main Street, Glen Rock and from 10:00 to 11:00 AM Friday at the church. Mr. Hengst was born on September 26, 1922, a son of the late Charles A. and Mary M. (Joseph) Hengst. He was a United Stated Army Air Force Veteran, having served during WWII. He had farmed for most of his life in the Brodbecks area and retired from CertainTeed Roofing Company in York where he was a machine operator for over 44 years, following which he worked for 13 years as a Stock Person at the former Pharmore Store in York. Merv was a member of Salem United Church of Christ in Jacobus. In addition to his wife, he is survived by three children John M. Hengst and his wife Roberta of West York, Joyce E. McDermitt and her husband George of York Springs and Diana E. Putman and her husband Raymond of Hanover; six step children, Kim Wooten and her husband Ralph, Patricia Allison and her husband Robert, John Day and his wife Lizabeth all of York, Carl Day and his wife Esther of Texas, Scott Day and his wife Jackie of Red Lion, and Christine Venable of Yorkanna; many grandchildren, great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren; two sisters, Romaine E. McGlaughlin of York, and Grace E. Smith and her husband Don of Seven Valleys; and a brother Wilburt Hengst and his wife Janet of York and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by two daughters, Melanie Ann Hengst, Dorothy L. Swemley; a son Mervin L. Hengst II; three sisters, Dorothy J. Dinges, Ruth M. Lazusky, and Catherine Hengst; and six brothers, Raymond E. Hengst, Sr., Charles A. Hengst, Jr., Lester P. Hengst, William Hengst, Earl J. Hengst, and Merle Hengst. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to a charity of your choice.
