Maxine E. Kerrigan Carlisle Maxine E. (Sortwell) Kerrigan, 92, of Carlisle, formerly of Glen Rock, passed away peacefully on March 17, 2015 at Carlisle Regional Medical Center of Pulmonary Disease. She had been a resident of Carlisle since 2010, first residing with her daughter, and later at Chapel Pointe Retirement Center. For more than 58 years, she was the devoted wife of the late Thomas A. Kerrigan who passed away April 1, 2007. Maxine was born June 24, 1922, in Indianapolis, IN, a daughter of Harold Haynes and Alma (Noland) Sortwell. After the death of her father, the family relocated to New Jersey, where she graduated from Red Bank High School in 1939. She received her degree in Medical Technology from Moravian College in Bethlehem, Pa in 1943. She was employed at Philadelphia General Hospital until her marriage in 1949. She worked at Annie M. Warner Hospital in Gettysburg briefly and retired in 1985 from York Hospital after 25 years of service. Maxine loved to play bridge, scrabble, and do word puzzles. In 1985, she was featured in a York Daily Record news article for her competition in the annual New York Times crossword puzzle contest. She continued her participation for many years, achieving the rank of semi-finalist. She also enjoyed playing the penny slot machines. Maxine enjoyed all sports and was a devoted Phillies fan. She assisted her late husband in the building of train layout buildings and was a member of the Train Collector’s Association for more than 30 years. She was a member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Austin L Grove Post American Legion Post #403, the Woman's Club of Glen Rock, and the White Rose Bridge Club. Over the years, Maxine was blessed to have many loyal friends and shared many good times with them. She was a loving mother and wife, and will be greatly missed. She is survived by a son, Thomas A. Kerrigan, Jr. of Baltimore; a daughter, Deborah L. Kerrigan of Carlisle; her devoted caregiver, Sue Stewart of Carlisle; a niece, Karen Stepelevich, her husband Steven and their son Steven of Devon, PA; a nephew Vincent Frigo, his wife Michele and their children Helene and Vincent of Royersford, PA; and nephew Anthony Frigo, his wife Gabriela and their son Anthony of Linfield, PA. She was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Sandra and a half brother, William Mielke. A visitation for family and friends will be held from 6:00 to 8:00 PM on Thursday March 26, 2015 at the Geiple Funeral Home, Inc. 53 Main Street, Glen Rock and from 10:00 to 11:00 AM Saturday March 28, 2015 at the funeral home with a Memorial Service to celebrate her life beginning at 11:00 AM Saturday with Rev. Jacqueline Starz, officiating. There will be no viewing. Burial will be held at the convenience of the family. In lieu of flowers, the family request that memorial contributions be made to York County Chapter of the SPCA, 3159 Susquehanna Trail North, York, Pa. 17406 or to the Special Olympics York County, P.O.
