Margareta Breden

December 17, 1939 — February 12, 2023

Margareta Mathilda Breden, 83, passed away on February 12, 2023, in Westminster, Maryland. Born on December 17, 1939 in Baltimore, she was the daughter of the late Hermann and Doretta Steingass. Margareta graduated from Catonsville High School in 1957 and went on to earn a Bachelor’s Degree in Sociology from Wagner College in New York City in 1961.


She married, raised her family and stayed active in the life of her childhood church, Zion Lutheran in downtown Baltimore. After working as a church secretary there for many years, she followed her calling to be a minister and returned to school earning her Master of Divinity from the Lutheran Theological Seminary of Gettysburg in 1998. She served at Trinity Lutheran in Shamokin, PA, and then was called to Friedensaal Lutheran in Seven Valleys, PA, from which she retired on January 1, 2020.


Margareta loved attending Christian retreats, gardening, discovering unique places to shop, sister get-away weekends, celebrating holiday traditions with her family, movies, visiting Gettysburg, and pastoring to her congregation. Most of all she prized time spent with her grandchildren Christopher, Alison, Timiri, Ciana, Ella, Nick and Jason Breden and great-grandchildren Kinley and Braelyn. Margareta is survived by sons Leslie, Hans (Jennifer Horan), and Thor (Deena) Breden, and her sisters Doretta Mayer and Helena Lowman. Margareta was predeceased by her parents and her daughter-in-law Barbara.


The service for the Reverend Margareta Breden will be held on February 16, 2023 at 10:30 a.m. at Friedensaal Lutheran Church in Seven Valleys, PA. She will be laid to rest in the cemetery at Friedensaal.
