L. Gene McCullough October 1, 1930 - February 14, 2022 L. Gene McCullough, age 91, of Glen Rock, died peacefully on February 14, 2022, at York Hospital after a brief illness. He was surrounded by his children and an immense amount of love. Gene was the loving husband of 66 years to Shirley Lorraine (Smith) McCullough, who died Dec. 14, 2016. Gene was born in Freeland, Maryland, to Nora (Dickmyer) and William Morton McCullough and grew up on their family farm just south of the Mason-Dixon Line. He moved to Glen Rock to marry the love of his life, Shirley, and to begin working for her father John R. Smith, a developer and owner of Smith’s Quality Supermarket, where Gene worked as store manager for his entire career. Gene was the last living member of a large family, including Gerry, Glenn, Carl, Clara Kraft, Calvin, and Ronald (Bob). Gene’s surviving in-laws include Ron and Carolyn Smith, Maryanne Smith, and Leroy Klinedinst. Family was most precious to him, and he is survived by his five children and their spouses, Pamela Wible (Will), Deborah Chantiles (Jim), Kim (Angele Haydel), Wayne (Becki Buss), all living in Pennsylvania, and Daryl (George Griffin), living in California. Kim’s first wife Janet (Steedle) died in 2010. Gene has 8 grandchildren, including: Nathan Wible (Jen), Lauren Wible LaBarca (Russ), Heather Chantiles Light (Matt), Matthew McCullough (Yvonne), Mark McCullough (Jenna), Kristi McCullough King, Quinn McCullough (Allison), and Kelsey McCullough. Additionally, Gene’s step grandchildren included Allie Torres (Will), Shane (died in 2016), and Victoria Sowers (Justin). Gene also leaves 11 great grandchildren and 11 step great grandchildren. Gene loved gardening, travel and taking scenic drives. He enjoyed spending much of his free time attending his children’s and grandchildren’s activities, rarely missing a sporting event, play or concert. He will be missed for his generous, loving nature, gorgeous flower gardens, hand-raised vegetables, and homemade pies, among many other talents. Gene will be laid to rest next to his wife and other family in the Glen Rock Trinity United Church of Christ cemetery. After a private ceremony for immediate family, a celebration of life will be held for all who wish to attend at a later date this Spring or early Summer. In lieu of flowers, the family is encouraging memorial donations to the Southern York County School District Foundation Scholarship Fund, P.O. Box 128, Glen Rock, PA 17327, or Trinity United Church of Christ, 27 Manchester St., Glen Rock, PA 17327, any local charity, church or philanthropy of the donor’s choosing. Geiple-Predicce Funeral Home handled the arrangements. Condolences may be shared at www.geiple.com.
