John H. Smith Glen Rock John H. Smith, 72 of Glen Rock, died peacefully Friday April 22, 2016 at his home. He was the beloved husband of Maryanne (Ebaugh) Smith, with whom he was married to for 56 years. John was born on May 21, 1943 and was a son of the late John R. and Florence A. (Rohrbaugh) Smith. Growing up John, worked long hours, helping his father with farming in Glen Rock and at the age of 10 went to work at his father’s businesses, the former Smith’s Quality Supermarket and during the summer months helped with the family construction company, building many homes around the Glen Rock area. At the age of 21 he became manager and chef of the former Smith’s Country Kitchen Restaurant in Glen Rock. During the years in which he operated the restaurant, it was known for the good food and the Sunday Smorgasbords in which many people stood in line waiting to enjoy. John also helped many local organizations doing Chicken Feeds to raise money for them. After selling the restaurant, in his later years, John when to work for Spangler’s Supermarket in Weiglestown and then for Jay’s Supermarket. He loved the outdoors, enjoyed hunting in Potter County, playing cards, eating crabs and watching old western movies. John also enjoyed being with people and was always a great story teller. He loved to aggravate his family and friends, in a good way, with his stories and practical jokes and was known as “Picky John” to his niece, Sabrina and as “Pappy Rat” to his grandchildren, whom he dearly loved and was proud of each of them. Caring about the community, he was a Charter Member of the former Glen Rock Jaycee’s and held memberships in the PA Grocer’s Association, the York County Wild Turkey Association, the NRA, the Glen Rock Athletic Association, the Jefferson Sportsman Club, the SHS Warrior Booster Club, the Glen Rock Hose and Ladder Fire Company, the Glen Rock Historical Preservation Society and Zion Lutheran Church, Glen Rock. Besides his wife, John also leaves two children, John S. Smith wife Kay and Shawna M. Smith; grandchildren, Samantha, Brandon, Alex and Connor Smith, two sisters, Shirley McCullough and her husband Gene and Gloria Good all of Glen Rock; a brother, Ronald Smith and his wife Carolyn of Hoschton, GA; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a sister Charmaine Klinedinst. Memorial services for family and friends to celebrate his life will be held on Saturday April 30, 2016, at Zion Lutheran Church, 49 Hanover Street, Glen Rock, with a visitation from 11:00 AM till 12 noon, with a memorial service beginning at 12 noon, with his pastor the Rev. Edward Robbins, officiating. Following with a social gathering to share memories will be held. The family requests that you dress casual for the service. There will be no viewing and private burial will be held at the convenience of the family. In lieu of flowers, the family desires that memorial contributions be made to Zion Lutheran Church, 49 Hanover Street, Glen Rock, Pa 17327.
