Gladys May Smith

January 11, 1936 — January 15, 2025

Gladys May Smith, 89, of York, passed away peacefully on January 15, 2025 in Dallastown. She was born January 11, 1936 in Shrewsbury Township to the late Samuel K. and Mary J. (Sterner) Sweitzer. She is survived by her husband David Smith, Sr. whom she graduated with from Susquehannock High School in 1953 and married on August 27, 1955 (yes that is 69 years!).

Gladys is also survived by her sons, David Smith, Jr. and wife Kathleen, and Dennis Sweitzer (né Smith) & daughter-in-law Sharon Sweitzer, brother Sam Sweitzer and wife Kathy, grandchildren Derek Smith and wife Stacey, Kyle Smith and wife Meghan, Jared Smith and wife Jessica, Liedeke Sweitzer, Natasha Sweitzer, Jolene Sweitzer, Kendra Sweitzer and step-grandson Cory Grove and wife Heather, nine great-grandchildren, Lyric Williams, Vincent Williams, Avery Smith, Kyra Smith, Owen Smith, Sam Smith, Joshua Smith, Alannah Smith, Killian Smith, many nieces and nephews plus various honorary offspring and grand-offsprings from over the years.

Gladys and David were charter members of the Theodore Burr Covered Bridge Society of Pennsylvania helping to document and preserve wooden bridges and old grist mills in several states. Longtime members of Shrewsbury Assembly of God involved in the Royal Rangers program and 'behind the scenes' helping with the kitchen and events. Gladys worked 36 years at Susquehannock High School in the cafeteria as well as in the office. Many will remember her as the cashier at the end of the line.

She enjoyed camping ("not in a tent, not on the ground!"), needlepoint and embroidery, family genealogy, learning about history ("bring me a book back!"), lighthouses, cooking, spending time with family, and combinations of the above. Later in life, she sorely missed being able to cook.
