Frederick J. Groft Sr.,90, formerly of Hanover, passed away on September 26th, 2021, in York, PA. Frederick was born on November 1, 1930, in McSherrystown, PA, to Earl J. Groft Jr. and Minerva (Strausbaugh) Groft. Mr. Groft proudly served his country in the United States Army During the Korean war. He sang country music in the band, “Freddy Rick and the Gamblers” who played all over Maryland and Pennsylvania back in the 70’s, 80’s, and early 90’s. During the 70’s he was the #1 country entertainer in Baltimore and later went on to be the first inductee into the Maryland Country Music Hall of Fame. He was a member of the VFW, Moose, McSherry’s Home Association, American Legion, and the Eagle Club. He cherished the friendships and memories made with his bandmates over the years, Greg Zinn, Danny Elswick, Calvin Dietz, and the late William “Billy” Chalk.” Frederick is survived by his Son, Frederick J. “Rick” Groft II and his wife Jennifer of Seven Valleys; his daughters Heidi Groft of Hanover, and JoAnn Nappier of Ocean City, MD; 9 Grandchildren; 5 Great-Grandchildren; and a brother Burnell Groft and his companion Mary of Hanover. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers Earl Groft Jr., Richard Groft; and a sister Dorothy Rippeon. A graveside service will be held on Friday October 1, 2021 at 10:30 AM at St. Joseph Catholic Church Cemetery, 535 S. High Street, Hanover, PA with Rev. Fr. Samuel Miller officiating.
