Ethel Irene Smith

Ethel Irene Miller Smith a resident at SpiriTrust Lutheran in Shrewsbury, PA went to be with her Lord on April 17, 2022. She was 106 years, four months and 1 day. She was born Dec. 16, 1915 to Charles and Ida McCann Miller on a farm near Jacobus, PA. The family moved to a farm South of Loganville when she was very young. Ethel attended Krouts School. She graduated from William Penn High School in 1932 at the age of 16. She was married to Grover Smith from 1934 until 1992 when he passed away. Ethel is survived by her five children. David and his wife, Gladys of York, PA; Glen and his wife, Pat of Auburn, WA; Margaret Venema and her husband, Sjoerd of Starwood, WA; Dot Myers of York, PA; and Mary Ann Newman and her husband, Jan of Red Lion, PA. Also surviving are 12 Grandchildren; 20 Great Grandchildren; and 20 Great-Great Grandchildren. Ethel was preceded in death by her parents and seven siblings: Edith Lutter, Harry Miller, Lottie Hare, Luther Miller, Leonard Miller, George Miller, and Bertha Smith. Ethel lived a life of service to others. In 1945 she and her family moved back to her parents home near Loganville so she could take care of her mother who had suffered a stroke. When she was no longer needed to help with her mother's care, she got a job at the York Hospital in the mail room. She worked there until she retired. Ethel was a member at Christ Lutheran in Loganville for 92 years. During her life she enjoyed crocheting, knitting, and quilting. Family dinners were always a favorite event and there was always room for one more. The family would like to Thank SpiriTrust Staff and Nurses for many years of loving care. A visitation will be held Wednesday April 20, 2022, from 10 AM until a funeral service begins at 11 AM at Christ Lutheran Church, 80 S. Main St, Loganville, PA. Interment will follow at Pleasant Hill Cemetery, Loganville. Rev. Douglas DeStephano will officiate. Memorial contributions in her memory may be made Christ Lutheran Church at the address above.
