Earl R. “Bud” Mays Glen Rock Earl R. “Bud” Mays, 76, of Glen Rock, PA, passed away at his home on April 21, 2014. He was born on April 12, 1938 in Butler, PA. Earl graduated from Butler Area High School in 1956 before attending and graduating from Grove City College, in Grove City, PA with a degree in Business Administration (and where he was a member of the Epsilon Pi Fraternity). He was a champion diver in high school and college, setting and holding numerous records. “Bud” Mays had been inducted into both the Butler Area Sports Hall of Fame and Grove City College Sports Hall of Fame for swimming and diving. Upon graduation from Grove City College, he entered the United States Air Force, where he traveled the world, including a tour in Vietnam. Earl earned the rank of Captain before landing in Ft. Campbell, KY, where he met his beautiful wife Brigitte (Geng) and two step-sons, Robert and Michael Machmer in 1969. A daughter, Misty Dawn Mays, was added to the family in 1971 and the family moved to Wilmington, DE, where Earl began his “non-military’ career with Westinghouse Corp. He served in the National Guard until being transferred to Saudi Arabia with Westinghouse for 5 years. Upon returning from the Middle East, the Mays family lived in New Freedom, PA where Earl continued his work in purchasing with Northrop Grumman in Hunt Valley, MD. Earl retired to Glen Rock, PA in 2005 and enjoyed golf (and the sand traps), puttering in the yard, and his grandchildren. Bud was also born and raised a Steelers fan. He is preceded in death by his parents, Earl M. “Hockey” Mays, Elizabeth Ellenberger Mays, and his stepmother Helen Graham Mays of Butler, PA. He is survived by his wife, Brigitte (Geng) Mays of Glen Rock, PA; two sons Bob Machmer and his companion Brenda LaChance of Bear, DE, and Michael Machmer of Elkton, MD; a daughter Misty (Mays) Russo and son-in-law Ed Russo; Grandchildren Taryn, Jake, and Sophia Russo of Jupiter, FL; and a sister Carol Ann Mays of Shrewsbury, PA. Private services will be held for the family. They appreciate and are thankful for the numerous expressions of sympathy, flowers, and cards that have been sent. The family requests that, in lieu of flowers, charitable donations can be made in Earl’s memory to St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital: 501 St Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105 or Paralyzed Veterans of America: 7 Mill Brook Road, Wilton, NH 03086.
