Dorothy Mays

November 2, 1930 — November 20, 2016

Dorothy “Dottie” Stermer Mays peacefully passed on Sunday, November 20, 2016 at the age of 86. She was the wife of the late Daniel Jesse Mays, who she met after a basketball game at the Glen Rock Community Building. They were married and raised their 5 children in Glen Rock, PA. She was born on November 2, 1930 to the late Mervin P. and Catharine Decker Stermer. Growing up in Glen Rock, she was a member of the Trinity United Church of Christ and graduated from Glen Rock High School in 1948. Many of those years were spent with one of her beloved dogs, at her side. She worked as a Secretary for the Glen Rock Borough, a Receptionist for Dr. George Trout DDS and a Salesperson at Valley View Farms. Dottie had many artistic talents and was an avid reader. She completed hundreds of cross-stitch and needlepoint pieces and wrote short stories and a cook book. For many years, family and friends would receive one of her handmade Christmas Cards or a tiny hand painted wooden replica of their home. Many of her replicas were of historic buildings in Glen Rock, Gettysburg, York and Alexandria, VA. Dottie enjoyed a good game of bridge or scrabble and loved to travel. As her fondness for gardening grew, she planted extensive daffodil beds. She looked forward to following the men’s college basketball season and she always relished in a little “shenanigans” with family and friends, ending with her infectious laugh. In later years, Lung Cancer and Alzheimer’s slowly took our Mother and friend from us. Her unconditional love and spirit will be sorely missed, but not forgotten. Dottie leaves her five children, Dan Mays of York, PA, Andy Mays and wife Nancy, of Westminster, MD, Rob Mays of Bellevue, Idaho, Jennie M. Butz and husband Roger, of Glen Rock, PA and Tracey A. Williams, of New Freedom, PA. Her 4 grandchildren Abby Mays, Julie Mays Geistfeld and husband Matt, Jesse Butz and wife Octavia and Nelson Butz. Also, her 2 great grandchildren, Ava and Brooke Geistfeld. She was predeceased by a grandson, Elliott Williams, of New Freedom, PA. At the request of the deceased, a private service to be held at the convenience of the family. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Arthur Hufnagel Library of Glen Rock, 32 Main Street, 17327 or to the York County SPCA, 3159 North Susquehanna Trail, York, PA 17406. Condolences may be shared at geiple.com
