Doris F. Gordon, 90, who was a long-time resident of York, passed away peacefully, on February 5, 2015, at her home in Palm Beach Gardens, FL. She was the beloved wife of the late Bernard Gordon, with whom she shared 63 years of marriage. Born in Baltimore MD, on November 20, 1924, she was the daughter of the late and Solomon and Jennie Naftel Frankel. Prior to her permanent move to Florida four years ago, she resided in York, a place she loved dearly. Mrs. Gordon graduated Magna Cum Laude from York College of Pennsylvania in 1978, and was a member of Alpha Chi Honor Society. Shortly after graduation, she become a Trustee of the college, and at the time of her death was a Trustee Emeritus of the college. She was a member of Ohev Sholom Congregation, York and a past president of the Sisterhood. She also served as a past president and Life Member of Hadassah, in addition to being a past chairman of the Women’s Division of the United Jewish Appeal. She proudly served on many local boards, including the York County Literacy Council and the Ladies Auxiliary of the Jewish Community Center. Her involvement with the JCC led to a groundbreaking program for Senior Adults, which she developed with her long-time friend and colleague the late Gloria Williams. In 1994, Mrs. Gordon was honored at the JCC when she received the Betty Dressner Individual Achievement award. Always an active community citizen, Mrs. Gordon was a member of Brandeis University Women’s Committee, the York County Heritage Trust, Friends of Martin Library, York Hospital Auxiliary, York Symphony Auxiliary, the Strand Capital Performing Arts Center, and Planned Parenthood. She was a member of the White Rose Bridge Club, the Outdoor Country Club of York, and the Boca Grove Country Club in Boca Raton, FL. She was the mother of two daughters, Phyllis Gordon Cohen and her husband Barton J. Cohen of Kansas City, MO, Lynne Gordon DeWitt and her husband, James H. DeWitt of Pacific Palisades, CA; a son, Robert I. Gordon of York. She was the proud grandmother of Liza DeWitt of Los Angeles, and her step-granddaughter Katie DeWitt of San Francisco; a sister to Fred Frankel and his wife Diane Malkin Frankel of Philadelphia. She was predeceased by a brother, Henry J. Frankel and his wife Phyllis Levy Frankel of Baltimore. Funeral Services will be held at 1:00 PM, Tuesday, February 10, 2015 at Ohev Sholom Congregation at Temple Beth Israel, 2090 Hollywood Drive, York, with Rabbi Jeffrey Astrachan, officiating. Burial will be in South Hill Hebrew Cemetery. The Geiple Funeral Home, Inc. 53 Main Street, Glen Rock is in charge of the arrangements.
