David Thoman, son, husband, father, friend, went home to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Sunday, February 11, 2024, surrounded by his family.
There are many ways to define a life well-lived, and by most definitions, Dave satisfied them all. His life was rich and his contributions to this world many. His love for and commitment to his family is legendary. His friendships ran deep, his loyalty was unquestioned and his humor was a bit mischievous.
Son of Leroy and Ruth Thoman, he was born January 13, 1941 in Glen Rock, Pennsylvania. He graduated in 1958 from Susquehannock High School. Dave's sense of adventure led him to enlist in the United States Army. He proudly served with the 101st Airborne Screaming Eagles until 1962. His time in the Army fostered a love of skydiving, which continued until he chose life insurance over a parachute.
He married the love of his life, Cassandra Clayton, in June of 1961. She was his guiding light and safe harbor for 54 years when she passed in April 2016.
He is survived by his children, Douglas, Dawn and Diane. All inherited Dave's adventurous spirit, which would play an important role in his final years, as they accompanied him on many journeys. He is also survived by his grandchildren Jordan (Jessica), Jennifer (Tony), Zach (Ellie), Alex (Angel), Carly (Tyler), Ben, and Brady (Taylor), Great-grandchildren, Chase, Caleb, Lucas, Daisy, Lily, Tian, Carter, Maddie, Brinlee and Mila, he was the brother of Elaine Miller, Dottie Howard, Dean Thoman and the late Norma Metz.
His career as a long distance trucker took him from coast to coast and everywhere in between. He drove for Hanover Wire Cloth, Frock Brothers Trucking and Harley Davidson, finally retiring in 2015. In 2017, Dave rode his Harley to Fairbanks, Alaska, had his picture taken and jumped back on the bike headed for home, all in 19 days. His three awesome children planned a trip to Chillicothe, Ohio in June to attend Kenworth's 100th Anniversary Celebration, as Doug's truck was one of 100 to receive an invitation. The highlight of the trip for Dave was riding in the parade with his son. His joy was captured in the many wonderful photographs.
In October it was time for another adventure, the last on his bucket list. His kids loaded his Harley and headed for Michigan to fulfill his dream of riding across Mackinack Bridge.
A true Harley enthusiast, he was often seen riding with his daughters throughout York County.
