Daniel P. Mays, 72 years old, passed on Dec. 21, 2023. He was a quiet christian man, giving much of his life in service to others. He was the first son of the late Daniel J. Mays and Dorothy Stermer Mays. Dan leaves his brothers; Andrew G. Mays and wife Nancy and Robert D. Mays and wife Lisia. And sisters; Jennie Mays Butz and husband Roger and Tracey Williams. Also, nieces Abby Mays and Julie Mays Geistfeld and husband Matt and nephews Jesse and Nelson Butz; Grand nieces Ava and Brooke Geistfeld. He was pre-deceased by nephew Elliott Williams.
Dan had his name written in the record books for his basketball athleticism, scoring over 1000 points and selected to the UPI All-State basketball team while attending Susquehannock High School. After graduation he attended the U.S. Naval Academy.
Dan was a logistics officer and Lieutenant in the USN. During his time there he was also a Drug and Alcohol advisor. He substantially improved the program and supported many Seaman on their way to recovery.
After leaving the Navy he graduated from Westminster Theological Seminary, focusing on Youth Ministry. He worked with inner city youth at Teen Haven in Philadelphia. His missionary work lead him twice to Kiev, Ukraine. While there he taught English and worked with the youth of Kiev. He returned home to help with the care of his parents.
At the time of his death, Dan was working on a missionary trip to Tanzania with St. Paul's Lutheran Church.
Memorial service to be held by St. Paul's Lutheran Church, 25 West Springettsbury Avenue, York, PA 17403 on January 17th at 2:00 pm. In lieu of flowers, we ask that contributions be made to St. Paul's Lutheran Church, marked - Tanzania.
