Daniel Jesse Mays Glen Rock Daniel Jesse Mays, 90, of the Brunswick at Longstown, who was formerly of New Freedom and Glen Rock, died Tuesday, June 9, 2015 at York Hospital. He was the husband of Dorothy G. (Stermer) Mays of Glen Rock. A funeral service to celebrate his life will be held 11:00 AM Saturday, June 20, 2015 at Trinity United Church of Christ, 27 Manchester St., Glen Rock, with his pastor the Rev. John L. Trout officiating. There will be no viewing, a visitation for family and friends will be held from 10:00 to 11:00 AM prior to the service at the church. Burial will be in Trinity UCC Church Cemetery, Glen Rock with military rites by the York County Veterans Honor Guard. Mr. Mays was born on July 25, 1924 in New Freedom, a son of the late Daniel Webster and Grace Viola (Miller) Mays. He graduated from New Freedom High School in 1943 and attended several colleges, including Thompson Business College and York College. He was a U.S. Army Veteran of World War II, serving in the Cannon Company, 274th Infantry. Upon returning he helped to form the New Freedom VFW Post #7012, in 1946. He also was a member of the Austin L. Grove American Legion Post #403, Glen Rock. A former Tool and Die Maker and Registered Certified Manufacturing Engineer, he retired from Caterpillar Inc., York in 1995, and conducted a Tool Consulting business from his home for many years. He also had taught Golf in the Adult Education Program in Southern York County School District. Jesse had played Professional Baseball for five minor league teams in the former Boston Braves and Pittsburgh Pirates organizations from 1946 thru 1950 and was a Life Member of the Association of Professional Baseball Players of America. He was inducted into the York Area Sports Night Hall of Fame in 2004. In 1972 he engineered the creation of the first Glen Rock Recreation Board and served as the first Chairman. He was also the architect of “Project 76” during the American Bi-Centennial which included the purchase and development of a 12 acre park for Glen Rock Borough. In 1995, he wrote the book “100th Anniversary of Sports in Glen Rock, PA” for the Glen Rock Athletic Association and in 2010 the Baseball Field at the park was named after him. Besides his lifelong devotion to his beloved family and home, he considered “Project 76” his most cherished accomplishment in his life. He was also a Past Master of the Shrewsbury Masonic Lodge #426 and was a member of affiliate Masonic organizations in the Consistory and Shrine. He was a member of Trinity United Church of Christ. Besides his wife, Dottie, he leaves five children, Daniel P. Mays of York, Andrew G. “Andy” Mays of Westminster, MD, Robert D. “Rob” Mays of Bellview, ID, Jennie C. Butz of Glen Rock and Tracey A. Williams of New Freedom; 4 grandchildren and two great grandchildren. He was predeceased by a grandson, Elliott Williams and his sisters, Dorothy Rosier, Mary Eisnesmith and Edna Boyer.
