Betty Bortner

Betty M. Bortner passed away June 27, 2021 after a brief illness at Wellspan Hospital. She was born September 9, 1943 to Myrtle (Jackson) Myers and Ervin "Jake" Myers (late) of Jacobus. She married Douglas Lee Bortner, June 13, 1964. They were married 56 ½ years until Doug's death, December 13, 2020. Betty is survived by her mother and an Aunt, Evelyn Smith of Shrewsbury. Betty graduated from Dallastown High School in 1961, York Junior College in 1963, Elizabeth College in 1965 and Millersville University in 1972. In high school, she was a piano and organ accompanist to the Concert Choir. Betty was a lifelong member of Christ United Methodist Church in Jacobus where she was an organist in the 1950's and 1960's. Betty taught seventh grade English in the Southern York School District from 1965 to 1995. She was a member of the Zipper Club Heart support group and volunteered with the American Heart Association and at York Hospital visiting heart patients from 1996-2010. Betty also enjoyed working at Brown's Orchard in the gift basket department at Christmas and making candy and caramel apples in the fall. She has been an active member of the American Association of University Women since 1995 and Judge of Elections for Jacobus Borough for over 20 years. Betty has been a dealer at Greybeard's Antique Shop in Jacobus since 2010. She enjoyed gardening, shopping at thrift sales and yard sales, oldie and classical music and watching oldies TV. She was a regular at the Colonial Coffee Shop. She was a cat lover and is survived by her beloved pets, Mattie and Molly. A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, July 6th at 7:00 PM at Christ United Methodist Church, 200 N. Main Street, Jacobus, PA 17407. Funeral arrangements by Geiple-Predicce Funeral and Cremation Services, Inc. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in her honor to Christ United Methodist Church of Jacobus or the Goodwill Fire Company of Jacobus.
