Arthur John Oplinger

On Friday, March 15, 2024, Arthur J. Oplinger, 84, passed away at WellSpan York Hospital. He was the loving husband of Toni A. (Rawlings) Oplinger for over 51 years. Art was born on February 26, 1940 in Hellertown, PA to the late Arthur J.G. and Grace E. (Kunsman) Oplinger. After graduating from Hellertown High School, he graduated from Penn State University with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Forestry in 1962. He then began his forestry career with the State of Pennsylvania for several years before working for, and retiring from, the former Glatfelter Pulp Wood Company as Vice President and General Manager. Art attended Greenmount United Methodist Church, where he taught Sunday School. He was a Certified Lay Speaker in the United Methodist Church where he preached and led Bible Studies. He served Bethlehem UMC as treasurer and historian. He also attended and served Immanuel UMC as a Sunday School superintendent and teacher. He led two Bible studies while with Immanuel. He was a member of the PA Forestry Association; American Pulp Wood Association, Society of American Foresters and participated in the Sustainable Forestry Initiative Certification program. He supported both the Maryland and Virginia forestry programs. Art served Codorus Township for several years as an auditor. He was an Eagle Scout, a member of the Sons of the American Revolution and the Penn State Alumni Association. In his spare time he enjoyed hunting, gardening, reading, hiking, traveling, and being a volunteer driver for the Amish Communities.

He is survived by his wife, Toni; four children, Robin Pagora, Kathryn Grace Holden and husband Gregory, John Paul Oplinger and wife Ginger, and James Daniel Oplinger; and ten grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother; and four sisters.

A funeral service will be held on Saturday, March 23 at 11:00am at Greenmount United Methodist Church, 4242 Greenmount Church Road, Glen Rock, PA 17327. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. Fr. Barry Yingling and Pastor Jean Ward will officiate.
